WELCOME TO SOY STATS

Introduction

Soy Stats, A Reference Guide To Important Soybean Facts & Figures, is a comprehensive resource for statistical information about the U.S. soybean industry and its relationship to world oilseed production. Publication of the Soy Stats Guide here on www.soystats.com will make this information available to millions of people in the United States and around the world. This resource is made possible by the contributions of U.S. farmers to the soybean checkoff program.

Soybeans were planted on a record 73.8 million acres (29.9 million hectares) in 1999, producing 2.643 billion bushels (71.94 million metric tons) of soybeans. The average price paid to farmers, $4.65 per bushel ($171 per metric ton), was the lowest average price since 1972, and a 36 percent decline in just three years. As a result of low prices, the total 1999 crop value was $12.3 billion.

In 1999, soybeans represented 52 percent of world oilseed production, and 46 percent of those soybeans were produced in the United States. Fully 60 percent of the world's soybean trade originated from the U.S.

U.S. soybean and product exports totaled $6.066 billion in 1999. The European Union continued to be the No. 1 U.S. market for whole soybeans with purchases of $1.033 billion. Japan remained the largest single country customer for U.S. soybeans with purchases totaling $775 million, and Japan also purchased $47 million worth of soybean meal. The Philippines became the largest customer for U.S. soybean meal at $137 million, $2 million more than Canada.

Korea was the largest customer for U.S. soybean oil with purchases of $61 million in addition to $224 million in whole soybean purchases.

Domestically, soybeans provided 82 percent of the edible consumption of fats and oils in the United States. The domestic crush level increased to 1,585 million bushels (43.14 million metric tons), while U.S. ending stocks of soybeans decreased to 300 million bushels (8.17 million metric tons).
